Thanksgiving Planning

Mom asked what she could bring, so it probably makes sense to figure out what all we're going to have and go from there.

  • Turkey
  • Ham
  • Stuffing
  • Dressing
  • Gravy
  • Yellow Squash
  • Deviled Eggs
  • Jellied Cranberry Sauce
  • Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • German Red Cabbage
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Peas
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Candied Sweet Potatoes
  • Rolls
  • Sticky Buns
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Pecan Pie
  • Relish Tray
    • Carrot Sticks
    • Celery Sticks
    • Black Olives
    • Green Olives
    • Sweet Pickles
    • Dill Pickles

Of this, I get to do the turkey, stuffing, and gravy this year because I'm hosting it. I've also already bought the olives and pickles for the relish tray as well as the jellied cranberry sauce. I have also prepared and frozen the yelllow squash, and I am going to make another batch of the German red cabbage, because we ate more of it than I expected when I fixed it a month or so ago. I'll also get the refrigerator dough going by Monday or so of Thanksgiving week for the rolls and sticky buns.

Still to be decided is whether we want to make a tradition of Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish. We have a bottle of "gourmet" horseradish cranberry stuff for sandwiches, but I don't know if we've decided yet whether to have the original on the table.

Mom is fixing the ham—very untraditional with my family, but I'm learning to be flexible with respect to Suzette's. Suzette's tradition also includes the macaroni & cheese (I love adding new side dishes to the table), so I'll leave that to her.

As for stuff to make the day before or more ahead of time, I guess that leaves the whole berry sauce, desserts—I prepared some fresh pumpkin, which was typically disappointing, so I have bought a can of the stuff—and deviled eggs. The potatoes, green beans, and peas can't really be made until that day.

I know I'm being greedy. Except for the ham, I'm really pretty content to do it all myself. :-)

I guess I will do the peas, pies and pickles (as well as the rest of the relish tray, but this lets me remember it) as well as the ham. Maybe when Kathryn gets back from her cruise, you can persuade her to do the deviled eggs.

Decided "yes" on Mama Stamberg's relish, by the way. Yum.

Add fruit salad, too. Woohoo!
